Reference manual for Linely commuters in Greater Kuala Lumpur: real-time departure headways, client-side Dijkstra routing, open GTFS data feeds, and local privacy architecture.
Quickstart
Linely requires no account registration, phone number, or onboarding walkthrough. Navigation tools work immediately upon launch.
1. Application installation
Download Linely on Android through Google Play. The iOS version is currently in App Store review. The initial view displays the complete Klang Valley rail map.
2. Location access
Granting location access is optional. When enabled, Linely calculates straight-line distance to nearby stations within 500 meters strictly on your device. GPS coordinates are never transmitted to a server or tracked in the background.
3. Guest operation
All routing, timetable lookups, and countdown features operate in guest mode. An optional email or Google login is available solely to synchronize saved stations across multiple devices.
Data sources
Linely ingests open General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) data from the Malaysian Government Open Data portal (api.data.gov.my), published by the Ministry of Transport, Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International.

Live arrivals
Arrival timers compute countdowns down to the second on your device rather than displaying static clock timestamps.
Platform states
- Arriving now: The train is within 30 seconds of entering the station platform area.
- Countdown interval: The estimated remaining minutes and seconds until scheduled departure.
- Headway intervals: Operating intervals between consecutive trains during peak hours (3 to 5 minutes) and off-peak hours (6 to 10 minutes).
Feeder bus coverage
Feeder stops within 500 meters of your position or selected station display approaching bus routes, headway intervals, and vehicle positions where GTFS-RT feeds are active.
Trip planner
Linely uses an offline Dijkstra shortest-path algorithm running against an in-app transit graph of over 170 rail stations and interchange walking connections across Greater Kuala Lumpur.
Fastest route
Minimizes total travel time by calculating in-vehicle travel duration plus walking transfer time. Best for rush-hour commutes when line frequencies are high.
Balanced route
Applies a 10-minute penalty per interchange to avoid platform changes and stairways unless significant travel time is saved.
Fewest transfers
Applies a 30-minute penalty per interchange to prioritize single-line direct journeys. Recommended when traveling with heavy luggage or during heavy rain.
ETS tracker
Linely includes schedule tracking for the KTM Electric Train Service (ETS) intercity rail corridor connecting Gemas, KL Sentral, Ipoh, Butterworth, and Padang Besar.
- Departure boards: Displays scheduled train numbers (such as Platinum EP9120 and Gold EG9022) with planned platform departure times.
- Intermediate timetable: Lists chronological stop times for all stations along the West Coast rail spine.
- Ticketing portal: Direct link to the official KTMB integrated ticketing system for seat reservations.
Saved commutes
Commuters can save frequent stations and routes for quick access:
- Station bookmarks: Pin daily transit stations to the main screen for one-tap departure monitoring.
- Route pins: Save origin and destination pairs (such as USJ 7 to KLCC) to run the trip planner in a single tap.
- Profile synchronization: Optional cloud sync powered by Supabase using email one-time passcodes or Google authentication. Saved items synchronize across your devices, while guest bookmarks remain stored on local device storage.
Preferences
Audio and sensory preferences can be adjusted in the profile tab:
- Disruption notices: Alerts for major service delays and track maintenance issued by RapidKL or KTMB.
- Departure chimes: Audio cue when a countdown reaches the chosen walk-to-platform threshold.
- Haptic feedback: Native tactile feedback for station selections and routing results.
- Interface theme: Light, dark, or system matching. The dark theme uses true black (#121212) to reduce battery consumption on OLED screens.

1. Is Linely free to use?
Yes. Linely is completely free to download and use with zero subscription fees, paywalls, or intrusive advertisements.
2. Does Linely require internet access to navigate?
No. Station directories, timetable schedules, and the Dijkstra routing graph are stored locally on your device. Route calculations and interchange guidance work underground without mobile reception. Live countdowns refresh automatically once data connectivity is restored.
3. What transit networks does Linely support?
Linely covers the entire Klang Valley integrated rail network: LRT Kelana Jaya, LRT Ampang, LRT Sri Petaling, MRT Kajang, MRT Putrajaya, KL Monorail, and KTM Komuter lines (Batu Caves to Tampin, Tanjung Malim to Port Klang). It also supports KTM ETS intercity train schedules and feeder bus connections.
4. Where does real-time arrival data come from?
Arrival schedules and headway countdowns are powered directly by open GTFS-Realtime feeds provided by Prasarana, KTMB, and the Ministry of Transport via api.data.gov.my.
5. How are rail countdowns calculated without public train GPS telemetry?
Malaysian rail operators do not publish public GPS vehicle telemetry for individual train sets. Linely computes departure countdowns locally down to the second using official GTFS timetable schedules and published peak and off-peak headway frequencies.
6. How often is timetable data synchronized?
Transit schedule feeds are synchronized weekly to capture service adjustments, holiday timetables, planned maintenance windows, and station updates.
7. How does the trip planner account for interchange walking times?
The offline routing graph models physical walkway distances and realistic transfer buffers between platforms (for example, between LRT and MRT lines at Pasar Seni or KL Sentral), ensuring route estimates reflect actual walking and connection times.
8. Can I use Linely outside Greater Kuala Lumpur?
Linely is focused primarily on the Klang Valley and Selangor urban rail network. However, our KTM ETS tracker and timetable schedules cover the entire North-South intercity corridor across Peninsular Malaysia, extending from Gemas up to Padang Besar.
9. Does Linely run background location tracking or drain battery?
No. Linely queries location sensors only when the app is active in the foreground to sort stations within a 500-meter radius. Location hardware powers down immediately when the app is closed or sent to the background.
10. How can account data and saved stops be deleted?
You can tap Delete Account in the profile tab to permanently purge all cloud bookmarks, custom station pins, and profile records from the database. For guest users, clearing local app storage purges all saved data instantly.
Privacy and governance
Linely is architected around local-first data processing:
- Local coordinate processing: Location coordinates are queried only to sort nearest stations. Coordinates never leave your device and are never written to server logs.
- No third-party tracking: No advertising SDKs, marketing pixels, or data broker libraries are bundled into the application.
- Open data compliance: All transit data ingestion adheres to Malaysian Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) standards.
